Nhưng vì tôi có test box tôi easily afford sacrifice và lose, tôi set about exploring, for your sake. Candidate đầu tiên là Autopatcher. Follow me.
Chi tiết hơn
Autopatcher là offline updater, hỗ trợ Windows XP qua Windows 8.1. Nó cho phép bạn download critical security patches, recommended updates, runtime installers, Office, other Windows components, và vài bits and bobs. Nghe như cool alternative cho WU, nhưng big question là, does it work safely? Speed may be important, nhưng bạn muốn functionality này impeccable. Super accurate, super safe, và hopefully, fast.
Real life testing
Như bạn imagine, some level of expertise required. Thông thường, bạn chỉ get standard security và recommended updates. Bạn sẽ cần mark .NET, Silverlight, Office, và other components separately. Trong test của tôi, default Windows set bao gồm 1.1GB worth of patches.
Điều này nhiều hơn bạn get nếu typically hit WU check button, however long it takes. Điều này có thể bleed bandwidth, nhưng at the very least, nó sẽ cache information, nên future updates won't be that heavy.
Select & install
Tôi có total 26 updates available cho March, makes sense given fact tôi last updated HP laptop in January. Thông thường, chỉ critical updates pre-selected, và nó cũng mark những cái bạn đã installed, nên no need to fuss và wonder.
Sẽ vẫn còn quite a few old updates, marked in black nhưng not selected.
All in all, in essence, bạn get same kind of stuff WU offers, nhưng bạn có thể hơi confused tại sao nhiều black, unselected entries. Not really height of usability.
Tôi boldly moved forward, và Autopatcher began installing updates. Completed without errors, nhưng cũng immediately offered reboot system, well, within 30 seconds.
Seems tool had done first run successfully. Tôi decide expand now, và try some other Windows components.
Với additional components marked, tôi embarked on another pull & install run. Tôi now able mark .NET components, và thậm chí annoying malicious software removal tool.
In the end thought, WU vẫn left với some extras not covered by Autopatcher. Tôi không chắc, nhưng điều này worries me ever so slightly, as it indicates some discrepancy giữa WU và Autopatcher. Could be configuration thing, nhưng bạn must keep in mind. That said, both tools working well, và no system corruption I could see, và tôi able grab updates normally.
Advanced
Maybe nếu bạn want deploy on multiple systems?
Errors
Vậy chúng ta đã biết Autopatcher missed one update, nhưng could be skipped one. Worst case, này probably means bạn sẽ cần dùng tool conjunction với WU, và dùng latter cho some leftovers, nhưng at least, chúng sẽ fast, vì won't be infinite list pending grab và search và whatnot.
Tôi cũng notice program wasn't too stable. Nó crashed a couple times trying to index deltas. Some extra robustness và logic needed.
Kết luận
Autopatcher seems useful program. One really worrying thing là bạn may miss a few updates here and there, nên bạn should not trust tool blindly. Autopatcher should be used để complement official utility và help speed updates, not completely và fully replace it.
Điều này brings us to most important piece - risk. How willing are you để let third-party tool manage updates? Nếu WU slow, Microsoft should fix that. Plus, có new cumulative patching model, ought to make life easier. Bạn probably should not change hoặc challenge integrity of system just because little extra waiting. And frankly, over past two decades và use of some 30+ Windows boxes, tôi never had issues với Windows updates. Tool worked reliably over many versions và incarnations. Only known problem là speed on some systems.
Và đó là what you need to know và decide. What is more important for you, và how you'd like to govern system. Nếu bạn ask me, honestly, tôi would not deploy Autopatcher without solid backup và imaging framework in place, nhưng this also true cho standard channels. Then, tôi wouldn't use it. Really. It's good, nhưng I'd like to be able to blame Microsoft for their software rather than someone else. And speed ultimately less important than total functionality và integrity, vì WU là something you do quite rarely, all in all. There we are. Autopatcher is a good tool, but the risk piece is entirely yours to decide. Can't help you there. And we're done.
Chào.
