Trên giấy, StormOS concept công nghệ excellent: base trên Nexenta (cái base trên Solaris), package với Ubuntu user-land và package management. Theory: Ubuntu-like behavior trên UNIX kernel. Healthy marriage.
Nhưng có thực sự magic blending: ZFS filesystem siêu advanced, Solaris dual-architecture advanced, package manager đơn giản nhất? So sánh được Linux seamless live CD + hardware detection? Default Xfce desktop ra sao? Fare overall scheme?
Hôm nay trả lời tất cả. Join ride of the storm — no pun intended. Nhớ: vẫn Beta! Things may break hoặc not work at all!
StormOS - Thực tế (The reality)
Thật không may, StormOS không sống upto concept. Live CD cho GRUB menu đơn giản trên mọi laptop, nhưng OS không boot. Boot sequence luôn hang ở init wired network adapter và fail. Message: "timeout waiting for X adapter to initialize".
Buộc test VM → không Wireless, không desktop effect fancy, không real chance xem behave trên hardware thật.
Nhưng ngay cả VM, things không smooth.
Live CD boot nhiều phút. First error:
Tôi không biết Xfce Trash service là gì, nhưng không phải good way greet user. Có thể Xfce issue.
Dù sao, có live desktop, nhưng Xfce desktop manager không start properly, top/bottom panel missing → flaky experience. Mở chương trình được nhưng không thấy nếu minimized. Chỉ Alt+Tab shuffle.
Live session không impressive. App start time/response sluggish — hiện tượng gặp Open Solaris. Do ZFS filesystem: thích RAM nhiều, mất thời gian indexing.
Thiếu panel + startup error + slow response → reboot cài đặt. Không cách install từ live session, phải reboot về GRUB.
Như Solaris, StormOS dùng dual-architecture, adapt platform.
Cài đặt (Installation)
Text-driven wizard, out of place cho Linux user hoặc người quen Open Solaris. Questions funny/odd: select continent/ocean...
Partition wizard không cho chọn partition riêng lẻ. Có thể UNIX noobness của tôi hoặc thiếu attention to detail, nhưng về simplicity, installer còn nhiều desired.
Sau cài đặt (After the installation)
Hy vọng Trash Service error mất, nhưng vẫn còn sau cài. Lần này có top/bottom panel.
Desktop:
Ứng dụng (Applications)
Basic set decent. Firefox (phiên bản cũ), GIMP. Có Synaptic. Không OpenOffice, nhưng có AbiWord. Rhythmbox cho nhạc, nhưng không grab test file vì Samba share không work — typical Xfce problem.
Đa phương tiện (Multimedia)
1 check: Firefox xem YouTube clip. Firefox báo missing plugin. Cài plugin qua browser wizard không work. Tìm Flash trong repo — không success.
Điểm này tôi bỏ cuộc. Quen simplicity/transparency multimedia Linux, flash [sic] archaic pain này quá nhiều, cộng các vấn đề khác.
StormOS không love tôi.
Khác (Other)
Không icon network locations trong Places menu — really really annoy me. Pure Xfce issue, không hiểu tại sao network sharing functionality khó include trong menu.
Về friendly, simple, intuitive, beautiful, functional: Xfce lacks severely vs Gnome/KDE, only advantage: lighter resource — frankly, không issue nếu dùng ZFS. 256MB RAM KHÔNG dùng ZFS, nên desktop manager choice meaningless. 16GB RAM dùng ZFS tốt, không quan tâm desktop.
Tóm lại, Hail là tên rất appropriate cho OS này.
Kết luận
StormOS Hail hiện tại không phải usable OS. Thiếu nhiều feature người ta coi granted. Hardware detection/init rất poor, fail boot trên 3 hardware platform khác nhau — worst result tôi seen. Live desktop slow/buggy. Install old-fashioned/unfriendly. Installed desktop functional nhưng spartan/uninspiring.
Muốn non-Linux OS → Open Solaris more sense, dù Oracle killed it, thanks corporate zombies. Gnome desktop proper functioning, hardware detection decent không perfect, install từ live session. Package management khó hơn/kém intuitive Synaptic, nhưng chỉ shortcoming vs StormOS.
StormOS có thể grow thành superb solution, best of all worlds, nhưng far từ đó. Quá nhiều bug, Xfce geeky choice. Xfce quá nhiều config/customization menu, không cooperate Samba. Hơi pale vs Gnome/KDE. 2010, Xfce nên decision out of dire necessity, không phải choice.
